Downing’s village in Co. Donegal is located on the Rosguill peninsula, this seaside village is blessed with fabulous beaches such as Tramore beach , An Meall Mor and Tra na Rossan to name but a few with magnificent views across Sheephaven Bay (whose name is derived from Ship-Haven) to the Ards peninsula. This small peninsula area jutting out into the Atlantic also has interesting walks and drives. The Atlantic Drive, one of the most dramatic and  scenic routes in Ireland,  is approximately 12km around the Rosguill Peninsula  and is  best appreciated,  if you walk or cycle. The walk can be comfortably accomplished in half a day. The views are spectacular, first across Sheephaven Bay , with its beautiful beach forming a golden link between two headlands. Further on is Melmore Head, which commands views across to Fanad Head. The road winds above Mulroy Bay with its many inlets, islands and peninsulas. Sheephaven Bay is ideal for water sports and deep sea angling. There is a purpose built dive centre in the neighboring village of Carrigart located just 1 mile from Downing’s The dunes that connect the Rosguill peninsula to the mainland are also home to the  Rosapenna Links C.ourse designed by the great Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews in 1891. Rosapenna's Old Tom Morris Course remains very much as it has been for the past century -- a standing tribute to the superb design work of those old masters. Go here anticipating a piece of historic golf magic, and you won't be disappointed.  The Rosapenna Championship Links Golf Course is only half a mile from Downings village.
